The Link Between CBD Use and a Good Night’s Sleep
As sleep deprivation is becoming a more common and problematic issue in our modern lives, it can often be a difficult and expensive venture seeking out products and techniques that can effectively aid us in getting our much-needed sleep every night. Sleep deprivation is increasingly being recognised by experts as a worldwide epidemic, meaning that the issue at hand is not something that we should be sleeping on as a society.
For those of us who lead more busy and active lifestyles, winding down at the end of the day and getting enough rest is an extremely significant factor in our bodies’ recovery process and therefore plays an important role in how well we perform in sport related activities and during our usual tasks throughout the day.
Unsurprisingly, this pressure that we feel in the day also affects how well we cope at night. Around 74% of us in the UK alone often feel overwhelmed or ‘unable to cope’, leading to a high quantity of us regularly experiencing stress induced insomnia. Alongside this, two thirds of British adults claim to suffer from sleep deprivation, with 23% of us only having around five hours of sleep every night. In contrary, 27% of people worldwide experience some sort of difficulty when trying to get to sleep at night [1]. Undoubtedly, sleep deprivation has become an invisible epidemic, one that we feel regularly but don’t see at the level of seriousness that we face it at.
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of two well-known phytocannabinoid compound’s that can be extracted from the cannabis plant (cannabis sativa), although there are many. CBD is largely used for medicinal purposes as it can treat a variety of different illnesses and chronic pain, from arthritis, to anxiety, epilepsy seizures and sleep deprivation for example [2]. The other most well-known compound is the psychoactive THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is known for being a Class B drug in the UK [3]. It is used for recreational purposes and for getting ‘high’.
By law, all CBD has to contain a maximum of 0.2% THC or below in the UK and 0.3% or below in the US. Most reputable CBD brands will be within the limit and would be able to provide test certificates to prove so. Many consumers believe that the products they buy are 100% THC free, however, this depends on where the CBD contained in the products they use is sourced from and the type of product they purchase. Always do your research and see what other customers have said about their experiences with certain brands and products prior to purchasing anything CBD related.
Research shows that the link between CBD and a good night’s sleep lies in the calming properties that the compound is well known for, in turn providing the user with a sense of relaxation that leads to deeper and longer sleep, allowing you to efficiently maintain an active lifestyle. As beneficial to sleep deprivation that CBD may be, there are still doubts about the THC levels found in some CBD products that some believe can lead to drowsiness that negatively influence your energy levels throughout the day. Luckily, many users of CBD oil report feeling a sense of calmness that has no correlation with feeling drowsy during the completion of their usual day to day tasks.
Whilst the introduction of natural medicinal remedies such as CBD is still fairly new in the West, the response that it has received has been wholly positive and well documented. Below is an outline of the best methods of taking our CBD oil. At Love4CBD, we feel as though these methods are much more beneficial, effective and longer lasting compared to the over-the-counter sleeping tablets that many become dependent on as a quick fix for their sleep deprivation.
- Add it into a cup of tea before bed – an easy and effective way to reap the relaxing benefits of CBD. Hint: chamomile tea is known for treating insomnia and can be used as a more calming alternative to your usual night-time beverage.
-
Place a few drops ofour Love4CBD oil under the tongue and hold for 60 seconds – the most common method of using CBD oil that can be done at any time of day. Aside from vaping, it is the fastest way to absorb the oil.
CBD also contains many properties that are beneficial for the skin and for severe skin conditions such as eczema as it encourages abnormal cell death and acne as it helps regulate the skin’s oil production [4].
-
IncorporateLove4CBD into your night-time skincare routine – CBD oil can be mixed into your favourite moisturiser or used as a facial serum to calm redness on sensitive skin whilst leaving your skin healthy and with a natural glow. Use CBD balm on cleansed skin before continuing with your nightly skincare routine to leave your skin soothed and your mind calm.
As previously stated, CBD brands can only contain a maximum of 0.2% THC or below in the UK (0.3% in the US) in their products meaning that the psychoactive properties of THC are low enough so that the user doesn’t feel ‘high’. Nonetheless, worries that the small amount of THC found in CBD oil may show up in a drug test are prominent, particularly amongst athletes and sporting professionals. Fortunately, cannabidiol has recently been cleared by the World Anti-Doping Association for use in sports (Jan 2018) [5].
Whilst CBD may be in the clear, drug tests DO pick up on any THC metabolites that may have entered your body with CBD. If this were to be the case and you were to fail a drugs test after consuming using CBD, it would most likely be down to:
- The CBD you have taken contains traces of THC in it (although this is highly unlikely).
-
The CBD product you take has been exposed tocross-contamination/may contain traces of banned substances – this is usually through poor manufacturing practice.
To avoid this, however, stay clear of unreliable producers and ‘cheap’ untrusted CBD products. Always conduct your own research into CBD before purchasing and double check that the products you use are 100% THC free and from a verified source. Within the UK sports market, Informed Sports is the current benchmark standard for tested supplements however they do not currently test CBD; making it tricky for athletes who want to use CBD. If you are a drug tested athlete, then don’t take the risk of buying badly sourced CBD oil.

FAQ’s
“Are CBD and THC the same thing? Will I get high?”
-
CBD (cannabidiol)is one of two well-known phytocannabinoid compound’s that can be extracted from the cannabis plant (cannabis sativa), although there are many. CBD is largely used for medicinal purposes as it can treat a variety of different illnesses and chronic pain, from arthritis, to anxiety, epilepsy seizures and sleep deprivation for example. The other most well-known compound is the psychoactive THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is known for being a Class B drug in the UK. It is used for recreational purposes and for getting ‘high’. Therefore, you will not get ‘high’ and your mind will not be altered in any way from taking CBD.
“Will CBD help me with my illness?”
- Our products are classified as food supplements that promote everyday wellbeing and not as a cure for illness. Please speak to your GP or medical professional if you have any concerns regarding any illnesses you may have and CBD use.
“How does cannabidiol/CBD oil work?”
- CBD is the medicinal compound found in the cannabis plant and doesn’t give the user a ‘high’ unlike THC, another popular compound that derives from the cannabis plant. It produces cannabinoids of its own, which are called endocannabinoids. These help to regulate bodily functions such as sleep, immune-system responses, and chronic pain. Because of its natural medicinal properties, CBD is fast becoming a popular addition within our daily supplements.
“What is the best method of ingestion?”
- Methods of ingestion differ depending on the product that you purchase. All of the products that we supply are packaged with their own set of instructions to make ingestion as simple as possible. From our own CBD lipbalm, chewing gum, capsules to swallow with water to our liquid that you drop underneath your tongue, there is a product to suit everyone!
“What is the safety of cannabidiol and your CBD oil? Are there any negative side effects?”
-
All ofour products have gone through stringent production processes, so we’re confident that our CBD oil is safe for consumption. However, please speak to your GP or medical professional if you have any concerns around taking medication and CBD use.
“Why are hemp derived cannabidiol/CBD oil products so expensive?”
-
Like anything that is imported from other countries,we need to cover the costly shipping fees and taxes to get our product into the mainland. Prior to this, all of our CBD products go through extensive manufacturing processes to ensure we create only the finest oil; from extracting it from the hemp plants to testing its potency and purity several times before it is packaged and sent to us. Although this process is costly, our prices are some of the most competitive in the market as we strive to bring you premium CBD products but at a reasonable price.
“Does CBD interact with other food supplements or medication?”
-
If you are worried about CBD interacting with your daily food supplements or medication, please book a consultation with your GP or medical professional to discuss your concerns before purchasing any CBD related product.
